ASSISTANT WANTED: Notorious, high-ranking villain seeks loyal, levelheaded assistant for unspecified office duties, supporting staff for random mayhem and terror, and other Dark Things In General. Discretion a must. Excellent benefits.
With ailing family to support, Evie Sage's employment status isn't just important, it's vital. So when a mishap with Rennedawn’s most infamous Villain results in a job offer―naturally, she says yes. No job is perfect, of course, but even less so when you develop a teeny crush on your terrifying, temperamental, and undeniably hot boss. Don’t find evil so attractive, Evie.
But just when she’s getting used to severed heads suspended from the ceiling and the odd squish of an errant eyeball beneath her heel, Evie suspects this dungeon has a huge rat…and not just the literal kind. Because something rotten is growing in the kingdom of Rennedawn, and someone wants to take the Villain―and his entire nefarious empire―out.
Now Evie must not only resist drooling over her boss but also figure out exactly who is sabotaging his work…and ensure he makes them pay.
After all, a good job is hard to find.
It took me time to get the courage to buy this book, and I got it at Walmart in an impulsive moment. I heard about this book a lot on Booktok, and this place failed me once, so was hard to not feel like it would fail me one more time.
But this book was not good...
YES.
It was so amazing that I couldn't put it down once I started it. Since page one, you are all in.
Assistant to the Villain starts Evie Sage -a woman so prone to disasters and injuries that is a miracle she is still alive- walking through the forest. She is desperate cause she cant find a new job, and her family depends on her.
Her thoughts are all in "The Villain" - yes, he is what you think, like his so original name indicates 🤣 - the dark, old, grotesque, and malevolent demon everyone said lives in that forest. But Evie is not afraid.
" The Villain" Evie scoffed, walking deeper into the trees and putting her hands into the deep pockets of her simple brown dress. "Perhaps he would be less murderous if his moniker wasn't so ridiculous."
Unless, of course, the name has been bestowed upon him at birth, in which case Evie would applaud his mother for her incredible foresight.
She thinks -like everyone else- that this evil entity is like the men in the tavern scene on Tangled 🤣 so when she is forced to the ground for someone hiding from some men and then finds out the person is saving her is handsome and young, and is "The Villain" she just burst in laugh. Of course that can happen to her. Is Evie Sage after all...
The funny thing here is that this is just the prologue 🤣 I had never read a prologue that was so close to chapter one, and that was funny too. In these first 16 pages, you get a view of how good the book will be cause Evie is so funny and so opposite to the villain.
" What depraved things am I going to be doing for you, Your Evilness?"
"Congratulations, Sage, from this day forward you are my new personal assistant. And if you must call me anything "Sir" will do just fine"
This is the typical "He fell first" but he doesn't know it 🤣 Evie crawled to his heart at first sight but he didn't want to admit it. And every scene with them is precious, cute, and funny. Evie always manages to say something about her boss behind his back but he always appears when she is doing it 🤣
And can we talk about Kingsley?
Every fairytale is not complete without the talkative animal. Ans Kingsley is that.
"I will not deny that thievery is one of my better traits. However, in this case, Those men were attempting to rob me"
"Rob you of... a frog... that's wearing a crown?"
"This is no ordinary frog, He can... understand and communicate with humans as well as if he were one. And he is in my care."
"And the crown is because...?"
"His name is Kingsley"
"Are you serious?
"do I look like I'm joking?"
Kingsley is the cutest thing ever 😍 I mean, come on! who wouldn't fall in love with a frog wearing a crown? AND HE HOLDS SMALL SIGNS TO COMMUNICATE!!!
I'm pretty sure hubby was so concerned about my mental health at some point while I was reading this book cause I was laughing alone 🤣 like a maniac 🤣 but I couldn't keep the laughs to myself. More on this scene where the frog holds a "HALP" sign
Was priceless!
I'm not gonna spoil you the end or, the plot. I think is better if read it and find it for yourself. But I have to admit that like other plots, I figured it out before the revelation came. So I wasn't surprised at all. Was a good plot tho. Amazing. Magnificent. I had to get up from my desk and run to hubby to tell him - at this point, the poor man the only thing he could do was roll his eyes and pretend to listen 🤭- even when he didn't know what I was saying 🤣
If you wanna have a good laugh and time, I recommend this book. You can't miss the opportunity to fall in love with Evie, The Villain, and of course Kingsley.
