When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder—much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. And she’s more than a little startled when the body disappears into thin air. Soon Clary is introduced to the world of the Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of warriors dedicated to driving demons out of our world and back to their own. And Clary is introduced with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is almost killed by a grotesque monster. How could a mere human survive such an attack and kill a demon? The Shadowhunters would like to know…
The first time I read this series was around 2014 when I still lived in a place where there wasn't a bookstore, just a tiny public library that didn't have good options. That being said... the only place where I was able to read books was online... illegally.
Don't judge me. I feel ashamed of that era. But at that time I didn't know a lot of English, so PDFs from this fandom where the girls translate the books and post them for you to read, was the best thing... like paradise. That's the reason why I need glasses now.
This series was my first series read. I had to wait for the last book "City of Heavenly Fire" and even when it wasn't a good translation cause they did it fast, I tried my best to understand and make sense of some parts that didn't... and I finished almost 1k pages, IN ONE DAY!!
Like I said... Now I don't see without my glasses.
"City of Bones" followed Clary Fray, a 15-year-old redhead who lives with her mother in New York. Simon is her best friend and I love him. Cause he always has a funny answer for everything. The story starts in Pandemonium, a nightclub where Clary is with Simon but finds herself in a strange situation. Cause she is seeing people that everyone else can't.
After that everything goes down, starting with her mother disappearing. Clary finds out about the Shadowhunters world and more secrets. And let me tell you, I love when the story goes fast. When you don't have to read a bunch of other stuff before the action begins.
I love Clary in the book. I love Lily Collins being Clary in the movie... but I'm not too fond of Mcnamara in the TV show. Her overacting in season one was so awful that took me so long to finish the season. And don't even let me start with Jace. I picture Jace Wayland as Jamie Campbell Bower. Period. He was the perfect Jace for me. The fact that they completely changed him in the TV show, was the other reason why took me years to finish the whole 3 seasons.
I enjoy the interactions of Clary, Simon, and Jace in the book. Those parts have me laughing like crazy all the time.
And to not make this even longer, let's talk about the incest thing here.
YES!
My teenage self was so invested in this. Like 50% of the teenagers who read this series in 2014. And most of the time I don't care, cause I'm part of the group that identifies the books like what they are.... fantasy. not real. I love to enjoy books and not worry about what topics will be in them, cause I only want to escape from this reality that has me all depressed.
So when I found on TikTok the hate against Cassandra for that, just made me want to read the books again. I mean, there are people out there that love Zade Meadows, so...
So yeah, even when it's been more than 10 years, I still enjoy and love this first book. I love all the characters, even Valentine. And apparently, I never left my Angel/Nephilim era. And it feels so good to have the physical copy in my hands this time. If you like, Fantasy, Romance, angels, and demons tropes, I highly recommend you this book.
I will try to get the whole series so I can annotate and tab in them like I did with this first one. You can find the annotations pictures on my Instagram, click the button down below to check it out.
